The voice whispered all around him. It was hushed, but at that same moment it consumed him. It whispered into his ears and, at the same time into his very soul. It probed him as if for ages, every word hanging on into eternity with every rasping breath. The exhales cut him deep as though artic winds would consume him completely. The harsh chill of her gripping symphony of voices would surely drive him mad he thought. He lay clutching at his head, desperate for relief, desperate for silence. Then the voice was gone.

The girl lay there on her knees in a ever growing pool of blood. The dark red circle spread out underneath her like an ominous shadow obscuring the floor beneath her. She lay there whimpering, crying, and struggling to catch her breath in that horrible puddle into which her very life was pouring. Her tears fell from her face as if a black ink ran from her very eyes; every single drop bringing that dark pool closer and closer to his feet. He stood there entranced, fixated on the dark figure before him, hunched over in agony.

Now the absence of that familiar thing was throwing off his sense of direction. He used to wander the same yard for days at a time when he was a child. Now that familiarity had passed. Towering oaks had withered and died and branches that once seemed impossibly out of reach seemed to bend to meet him as he walked down the dusty field road that led from his grandfather’s old house to the old barn. How many summers had he spent there helping him fix the old farm equipment?
